Put simply: 

            Profit = Sales - Variable Expenses - Overheads

By looking at each component individually, we can then put in place strategies, for example,


Sales                            Implement a contact program

Variable Expense       Review the sales and production process and 
                                                                  eliminate inefficiencies

Overheads                   Eliminate non-necessary overheads
